In this fine piece of journalism, Zoellnerdoes for uranium what he did for diamonds in The Heartless Stone—he delves into the complex science, politics and history of this radioactive mineral, which presents the best and worst of mankind: the capacity for scientific progress and political genius; the capacity for nihilism, exploitation, and terror. Because Zoellner covers so much ground, from the discovery of radioactivity, through the development of the atomic bomb, he doesn't go into great depth on any one topic. Nonetheless, he superbly paints vivid pictures of uranium's impact, including forced labor in Soviet mines and lucky prospectors who struck it rich in harsh environments, the spread of uranium smuggling, as well as an explanation of why it was absurd to claim that Saddam Hussein was attempting to purchase significant quantities of uranium from Niger. The only shortcoming is Zoellner's omission of the issue of radioactive wastes generated by nuclear power—a significant problem given the possibility of a growing reliance on nuclear power. One of my favorite books of all time. It really does read like a novel at different points. A wealth of interesting information about one of the most influential substances on modern human history. Lots of great perspectives and many varied stories about everything possibly relating to Uranium. I can't think of a nonfiction book that I liked reading as much as this one.
This is great stuff! I'm in the middle of it now and I think it's one of the best books I've bought on Amazon. Richard Rhodes' classic was just too ponderous for me to get through at the time, but 'Uranium' gives me just what I need to know about the nuclear world without knowing exactly what every well-known physicist of the era had for breakfast that morning. All of the disparate info you've ever known/not known about nuclear physics and its politics comes together here in a very coherent style that doubles as both travelogue and suspense novel. Plus, you have to get it now to figure out just what the heck the title of this review has to do with anything, right?
An excellent book, and a truly fascinating reading experience. If you have never been afraid of radioactivity, this book will do it for you! Deep background on what really is 'the rock that shaped the world.' My very highest recommendation!
A very good book with a view of Uranium in a different way. The effects of this mineral on the world, in ways other than the obvious bomb, are presented. A very entertaining and educational read.
Tom Zoellner creates a wonderful tome explaining how the discovery, scientific understanding, mining, and development of uranium influenced recent history. I can remember studying about this strange element in the periodic table, atomic number 92, and its radioactive peers, such as Radon (86), Radium (88) Plutonium (94), to name a few, and how the science made me a bit listless. Had Zoellner's "Uranium" been available at that time, there would have been no doubt in my mind of why the tedious study of nuclear chemistry and physics was so important. It literally dictated the course of history since the latter half of the 20th century.This is, as one would expect, more of a history book than a scientific text. The world is the stage for this fascinating story. From it's early discovery in Shinkolobwe, in the Belgian Congo, to the post war American uranium rush centered around Moab, Utah, uranium was more coveted than gold had been in the previous century. It has been found on virtually every continent (except Central and South America).The rush to develop the atomic bomb, won by the United States during World War II during the Manhattan Project, culminating in the devastating uranium bombing of Hiroshima and the plutonium bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, put a merciful premature end to the most destructive war in history. Of course, the history of element number 92 did not stop there. After providing a wonderfully detailed account of this period, including a vivid description of the various colorful personalities involved (Oppenheimer, Fermi, etc), Zoellner goes on to examine the desperate pursuit of uranium 235 by the Soviets, the resulting forced labor camps in St. Joachismal (Bohemia), the slump of the uranium market after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and the recent renaissance of uranium as a result of its coveting by Iran and other Islamic powers for the purpose of military domination, and other third world countries for both peaceful and non-peaceful purposes.This is not a quick or easy read. But it is really not meant to be. Still, I recommend it highly for the serious student of science and history, and especially for the reader who is interested in how the former dictates, to a large extent, the latter.
This book is well worth the read! As other reviewers have noted, the book covers a good range of history, with amazing anecdotes in every chapter. The subject is very relevant now that industrial countries are revisiting nuclear power.Why not 5 stars? There was no single cohesive idea (other than the mineral itself) to tie everything together. The end of the book was an end of the anecdotes, not really the completion of a story or thesis.But I don't think that's a big shortcoming. This is an enjoyable read, well researched and evenly presented.

first let me say i am a science geek and a history buff. i started this book and couldn't put it down. this is a well researched well thought out book. i learned so much from this book. i would recommend this book to anyone who is a curious person or someone who likes to learn while being entertained. it is a good read
